Mandy Cooke is a Social Studies teacher at Columbine High School. She was awarded a grant for College Board’s AP Institute Training.
“With twelve years of high school teaching experience I decided last year that I was ready for additional challenges. I saw an opportunity for professional growth when the Social Studies Department discussed offering AP Human Geography at Columbine beginning in the 2017 school year. In May I applied to the Academic Foundation for a grant to attend the Advanced Placement Summer Institute held at Cherry Creek High School. The five days I spent absorbing information shared by veteran teachers who are teaching AP Human Geography has been invaluable. I am so grateful!
I am applying what I learned at the Institute every day in my classroom and my students are the direct beneficiaries. Though it’s my first year of teaching this challenging subject, I am better prepared due to the Institute training I received and I am having so much fun. I look forward to continuing to grow and learn with my students. Thanks to the Academic Foundation and the donors for making it all possible!”
